Istanbul has been a capital under three empires in turn, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman, and the layers sit within sight of each other in the old city: the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace.
The Bosphorus splits the city between Europe and Asia, crossed constantly by commuter ferries, and the Grand Bazaar keeps a trading history alive that predates every empire that has ruled here.
