After a decade in LA and a few weeks in Cebu, Kuala Lumpur was the first city we reached in a shape we recognised: freeways and high-rises, working transit, and parks set against the towers. From the 34th floor of our Airbnb, the city framed itself as a familiar form with details that were entirely its own.

A food tour at Kuala Lumpur's Chow Kit Night Market introduced us to the three culinary traditions at the heart of Malaysian food. From snake skin fruit and durian to roti canai, grilled mackerel, and the cendol that became our gold standard, this was the meal that set the tone for our time in Malaysia.

A day playing tourist in Cebu City: the Spanish fort that became a Japanese detention camp, a museum wing of sea charts that sparked a conversation about aviation navigation, a hilltop monument built by a man for his late wife, and 168 steps to a Taoist temple full of dragons.

Our first Cebu Airbnb gave us a crash course in slow travel: ask better questions, adapt quickly, and pay attention to the details that shape daily life.

The first week is rarely about the place itself. It is about friction: where to buy laundry soap, how to cross the street, and the slow shift from hesitation to rhythm.
