Tbilisi has been the capital of Georgia since the fifth century, built where the river cuts a gorge through the hills at a crossing point between Europe and Asia.

Sulphur springs gave the city its name and its domed bathhouses, still working in the Abanotubani district. Above them the old town climbs toward Narikala fortress.
