Astana sits on flat steppe in northern Kazakhstan, a capital by decision rather than by history. The government moved here from Almaty in 1997 and the city has been under construction ever since.

Wide avenues, ceremonial axes and a collection of landmark buildings give it a deliberate character, and the winters are long and severe even by Kazakh standards.
