Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna kingdom for centuries before it became part of Siam, and the moated old town still marks the original walls.

The city is quieter and cooler than Bangkok, with hundreds of temples, a food culture drawing on Lanna and Shan cooking, and Doi Suthep holding a temple above the whole valley.
